One of the most common and catastrophic mistakes made by law firms and government agencies is improperly redacting PDFs. If you use a standard PDF viewer to draw a black shape over a Social Security Number, you are only modifying the visual layer.

The PDF specification layers objects on top of each other. If a hacker opens that 'redacted' PDF in Illustrator, or simply highlights the black box and hits CTRL+C, they will perfectly extract the sensitive text hidden beneath the shape.

Utiliome performs true cryptographic redaction. When you draw a redaction box, our WebAssembly engine traverses the internal binary tree of the PDF. It identifies every single text character and image pixel that intersects with your box and permanently deletes that data from the file's source code before applying the black visual block.

The entire purpose of redaction is to hide sensitive Information (PII) before sharing a document. It is illogical and highly dangerous to upload that unredacted document to a generic 'free PDF tools' website.

Redacting text is relatively straightforward, but what happens when you need to redact a face in a photograph or a sensitive section of a vector blueprint?

If a tool just places a black box over an image, a user can extract the original, unmodified image file from the PDF's asset dictionary. Utiliome’s engine intercepts the image rendering process. If a redaction box intersects an image, we mathematically crop the image data, permanently destroying the pixels beneath the redaction zone so the original asset can never be recovered.

A common flaw with web-based redactors is that they take a 'screenshot' of your page, draw the black boxes on the image, and save the image as a new PDF. This balloons the file size and destroys the crispness of the text.
