Understanding Aztec Code Symbology: High-Density 2D Barcodes for Transit and Security
Aztec Code is a matrix 2D barcode symbology invented by Andrew Longacre, Jr. and Robert Hussey in 1995, and officially standardized under ISO/IEC 24778. Unlike QR codes which feature three square finder patterns in the corners, or Data Matrix symbols which use an L-shaped finder border, an Aztec Code is constructed around a distinctive central square 'bullseye' finder pattern. This central bullseye structure enables optical scanners to locate and decode the barcode rapidly at any orientation, even under extreme rotation or when displayed on curved paper, glossy smartphone displays, or low-resolution thermal tickets.
One of the greatest advantages of Aztec Code is its high data density and efficiency. Aztec Code does not mandate a wide surrounding quiet zone margin (white border space around the symbol), allowing it to fit into tight physical layouts where space is at a premium. A full-range Aztec Code symbol can scale up to 32 layers and store up to 3,832 numeric digits, 3,067 alphabetic characters, or 1,914 bytes of binary data. Additionally, Aztec Code incorporates robust Reed-Solomon error correction, which can be configured from a minimal 5% up to a maximum of 90% error protection, allowing damaged or scratched physical tickets to be scanned reliably.
